parents and children relationship
Can a normal parent-child relationship be accounted as a type of intimate relationship?

I saw a book talking about the categorization of interpersonal relationship. There are mainly 3 types: strangers, acquaintances and intimacy. Then usu. can a normal parent-child relationship be accounted as a type of intimate relationship? Thanks.

Hi Christina,
Yes. In sociology intimate relationships include all PRIMARY relationships. Among other characteristics primary relationships include deep feelings about the other person. SECONDARY relationships tend to be more instrumental and/or contractual. In a secondary relationship our feelings aren’t as deep about the other person and we focus mostly on the purpose of our interactions with the other person. We sometimes label intimate relationships as MULTI-BONDED. That means that we connect with the other person in a multitude of ways. A parent-child relationship is intimate or primary in that sense. Regards.
